Why Sam Nunn sucks

By Kathy G.

Although women are only 14% of Army personnel, in 2007, 46% of those discharged under "Don't ask, don't tell" were female, according to a new report.

The misbegotten "don't ask, don't tell" policy was, of course, Sam Nunn's baby. And when Nunn was in the Senate, he reportedly fired two staff members for being gay.

Comically, the Great Mentioner has touted Sammy boy as a possible Democratic veep pick for every election since 1984. And to my astonishment,  after all these years, the flame of the inexplicable yet undying DC insider cult of Sam Nunn burns on, unabated.

There are plenty of Democrats who'd make fine picks as a running mate for Barack Obama, but Sam Nunn as is not one of them. His time -- if there ever was one -- has come and gone. I say, it's time to move on and return Nunn's reanimated corpse to the crypt, where it belongs.

UPDATE: Over at Firedoglake, Teddy has more on why Sam Nunn, along with Chuck Hagel and Richard Lugar, would all be exceptionally shitty choices for the veep slot.

I'll admit that Nunn was pretty bad on questions of gender equity, but I worked for him for a bit and he's a thoughtful, honorable man. Does this mean I think he should be VP? Well, no. But I do think a role in the administration wouldn't be inappropriate.

Teddy has more on why Sam Nunn, along with Chuck Hagel and Richard Lugar, would all be exceptionally shitty choices for the veep slot.

Well, for two of the three, the fact that they're Republicans is enough to disqualify them for me, and Nunn's as socially conservative as either of those two. What more discussion need there be?
